Tesla AI Day 2022 βProduct overview
Tesla announced its humanoid robot program as Tesla Bot in August 2021, but the machine later identified as Optimus Gen 1 was first shown at AI Day on September 30, 2022. Tesla presented two robots that night: Bumble C, a rough development platform using off-the-shelf components, and a second body built with Tesla-designed actuators, battery, control system and electronics. Elon Musk called the latter Optimus version one, although it was not yet ready to walk without support.
Tesla's presentation specified 28 degrees of freedom in the body and 11 in each hand, yielding 50 when the hands are included. It also described a 2.3 kWh, 52 V battery, Tesla's self-driving computer, camera-based perception and an occupancy network adapted from the automotive Autopilot stack. A later technical report gives the Gen 1 platform's mass as 73 kg, substantially heavier than the 56.7 kg target shown for the 2021 concept.
At Tesla's March 2023 Investor Day, video showed the in-house platform walking and performing simple manipulation work. Tesla never sold Gen 1 or published a complete product datasheet. The company introduced Optimus Gen 2 in December 2023, making Gen 1 a discontinued development platform rather than a commercial robot.
Capabilities
Tesla described the Gen 1 body as using its own actuators, battery pack, control system and communications hardware. [2][3]
The AI Day specification was 28 body degrees of freedom plus two hands with 11 degrees of freedom each. [2][3]
Tesla specified a 2.3 kWh, 52 V battery pack and said its typical work profile was designed around roughly a full day of work. [2][3]
The robot used Tesla's self-driving computer and camera-based neural networks, including an occupancy network retrained for the humanoid. [2][3]
