Product overview
Vyommitra is a half-humanoid robot that ISRO, India's national space agency, unveiled on 22 January 2020 at a human-spaceflight symposium in Bengaluru. Launch coverage described an anthropomorphic upper body with two arms, a head and a torso. An official parliamentary answer says the robot was developed to demonstrate robotic technologies during the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission.
Vyommitra is intended to conduct experiments and monitor conditions inside the crew module. Coverage from its unveiling said it could operate switches, respond to voice commands and warn about carbon-dioxide levels and canister replacement. ISRO began integrating the robot with the crew module on 28 April 2026.
In August 2026, India's Press Information Bureau said the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission carrying Vyommitra was targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. No launch had been confirmed by 8 October 2026, and the programme's schedule has changed repeatedly. Vyommitra remains a government research prototype with no commercial price or order route.
