Product overview
The Actroid is a human-looking android made by Kokoro Company Ltd. of Hamura, Tokyo. Wikipedia says it was developed with Osaka University, and Kokoro's own timeline dates the first model's debut at the International Robot Exhibition to November 2003. It is an upper body modelled on an average young Japanese woman, with articulated arms, torso, head and face.
The series was used for reception and guide work. Actroid units were stationed at Expo 2005 in Aichi, where they guided visitors. Kokoro introduced Actroid-DER rentals in June 2005; DER2 followed in 2006 and DER3 in 2008. Wikipedia says the Actroid-F was released in male and female versions in 2011.
Actuation is pneumatic. Kokoro describes an air servo system that drives everything from large arm and torso movements to subtle lip motion. Most AI computing sits outside the unit, and speech recognition and a conversation engine can be added through external equipment. Mobility is limited, and the robot is shown seated or standing with support.
Kokoro's 2010 product brochure gives the Actroid-F main body as 600 ร 800 ร 1,400 mm and 30 kg, with 12 movable axes across the face, neck, shoulders and waist. The Actroid-F is made to sit on a chair, so its 1,400 mm height is not a standing height and is not recorded as one. Kokoro currently lists custom production of Actroid models and rental of the Actroid-DER series, but gives no price, and the DER rental page lists no specifications.
