Product overview
EMIEW3 is a wheeled service humanoid that Hitachi, Ltd. announced in Tokyo on 8 April 2016. Hitachi designed it for customer support and guidance in shops and other public facilities. The robot is 90 cm tall and weighs 15 kg, and Hitachi gives its top speed as up to 6 km/h, matching human walking pace.
The announcement described a robot that can detect people who need help and approach them to start a service interaction. The release also describes indoor network cameras used to locate people and objects, voice processing that works against background noise, and collision avoidance for people who suddenly appear from blind spots.
Robot database Robots Guide lists 23 degrees of freedom, a lithium iron phosphate battery rated at about 3 hours, and wheel-and-caster feet. Hitachi used EMIEW3 in customer proof-of-concept trials. In March 2020, Hitachi announced that the new EMIEW4 would enter commercial operation in April, explicitly describing it as an improvement over EMIEW3. EMIEW3 is therefore listed as discontinued.
