Product overview

About SoftBank Pepper

Pepper is a wheeled humanoid developed by Aldebaran Robotics and introduced by SoftBank in Tokyo on 5 June 2014. Sales began in Japan in June 2015. The current official specification gives a height of 121 cm, mass of 29 kg and 20 degrees of freedom, including three axes in its mobile base.

The head carries four microphones, two 2D cameras, a stereo camera, a 3D sensor and three touch sensors. The base adds sonar, laser, infrared, bumper and inertial sensors. SoftBank lists a maximum speed of 2 km/h, a 795 Wh lithium-ion battery and up to 12 or more hours of operation for the current home plan. A public developer portal provides SDKs and documentation.

SoftBank temporarily adjusted production in 2021 but said it would continue selling Pepper and providing services. Current Japanese product pages still offer the robot through rental plans. Pepper for Home 2.0 is listed at JPY 43,780 per month, tax included, on an annual rental; shorter monthly rental is more expensive.
