About Honda P1

The Honda P1 is a bipedal humanoid prototype from Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Honda developed it in 1993, and it was the first P-series model to add a torso and arms to the company's legged walking research. The robot stayed out of public view until Honda announced the P2 in December 1996.

Honda's official history page gives the P1's height as 1,915 mm and its weight as 175 kg. It used an external power source and computer, and Honda says it could operate a switch, grasp a doorknob and carry an object. IEEE Spectrum's 2026 article on the P2 walking milestone reports that the P1 could carry a 70 kg object. Wikipedia's P-series table, citing archived Honda material, lists 30 degrees of freedom; it does not give a P1 walking speed.

The P1 is a historical prototype and is no longer developed or sold. Honda followed it with the P2 and P3, and then with ASIMO in 2000. Wikimedia Commons holds photographs of a P1 on display at the Honda Collection Hall in Motegi, Japan.
