Product overview
The Honda P2 is a bipedal humanoid prototype from Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Honda announced it in December 1996 with a demonstration video, and it was the model that made Honda's P-series public after the P1 had been developed in secret. Honda describes the P2 as the world's first autonomous bipedal robot, with a built-in computer and power source.
Honda's IEEE Milestone page says the P2 could walk on uneven or sloping ground and could use a six-axis force sensor to estimate tread depth on stairs. It could tighten bolts while sensing reaction force in its hand, and it could reduce strain when pushing a cart by taking smaller steps. Honda's official history page lists the P2 at 1,820 mm and 210 kg.
Wikipedia's P-series table, citing archived Honda specifications, gives 30 degrees of freedom, a walking speed of 2 km/h and a working load of 5 kg per hand. IEEE Spectrum reports that its onboard nickel-zinc battery lasted about 15 minutes. The P2 was recognized as an IEEE Milestone in April 2026 and is no longer developed or sold.
