Product overview
Surena III is the third model in the Surena series built by researchers at the University of Tehran. IEEE Spectrum reported its unveiling on 16 November 2015, describing a robot 1.9 m tall, weighing 98 kg, with 31 degrees of freedom driven by 31 servomotors. Wikipedia gives the height as 1.98 m in one section and 1.9 m in another; this file uses the Spectrum figure.
Development was funded by Iran's Industrial Development and Renovation Organization, and about 70 people from the University of Tehran and five other Iranian institutions worked on it. Its sensing included a Kinect-based 3D vision module, encoders in all joints, six-axis force/torque sensors in the ankles and an IMU in the torso. The software ran on ROS, and the robot could recognize some predefined Persian sentences.
The project lead said the robot could walk up and down stairs and ramps, and footage showed it kicking a ball. The article reported a walking speed of 0.2 m/s, compared with 0.03 m/s for Surena II; Wikipedia gives a mean speed of 0.3 km/h. Surena IV succeeded it in 2019, so this file lists Surena III as discontinued. No price or availability is reported.
