Product overview

About KAIST DRC-HUBO+

The DRC-HUBO+ is a bipedal disaster-response humanoid developed by KAIST for the DARPA Robotics Challenge. KAIST's retrospective lists the 2014 robot at 173 cm and 82 kg, with 32 degrees of freedom driven by 36 brushless DC motors. Other published figures differ slightly: an academic design paper gives 175 cm and 80 kg, while Robots Guide gives 170 cm and 80 kg.

Wheels at the knees let the robot change from bipedal walking to a faster rolling posture. Its arms can lift up to 15 kg each, and its adaptive grippers were designed for varied tools and objects. Team KAIST used the platform to win the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge finals and the US$2 million first prize.

The sensor suite includes force and torque sensors at the limbs, inertial and fiber-optic gyroscopes, shin optical-flow sensors, cameras and 2D lidar. Robots Guide reports four hours of operation. The platform is retained here as a discontinued historical research robot because no current development or sales program was found.

Capabilities

Key features

Walk-and-roll mobility

Wheels on the knees let the robot switch between walking on two legs and rolling. [1][4]

2015 DARPA finals

Team KAIST won the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge finals and the competition's US$2 million first prize. [4][5]

Sensor suite

The robot carries force and torque sensors at each limb end, an inertial measurement unit, a fiber-optic gyro, shin optical-flow sensors and a 2D lidar. [1]

Teleoperated disaster response

The robot is designed for disaster response and can be teleoperated in hazardous environments. [1]
