Product overview
The hydraulic Atlas was Boston Dynamics' humanoid research platform, first shown on 11 July 2013. Its last hydraulic generation, from about 2021, was battery-powered and used hydraulic actuation.
Wikipedia gives about 1.5 m height, 85 kg weight and 20 degrees of freedom for that 2021 version, citing a 2021 Boston Dynamics video. Other sources cite different values for earlier designs, so the specifications in this entry describe only the 2021 version.
Boston Dynamics announced in April 2024 that the hydraulic Atlas was being retired and that the electric Atlas would follow. The company said the hydraulic version, which it called HD Atlas, could already lift and maneuver a wide variety of heavy, irregular objects. Its retirement post gives no numeric specifications for either robot. Development then moved to the electric design described in the company's 'An Electric New Era for Atlas' article. The entry is discontinued, and it has no price or order option.
