Product overview
HRP-1 was the first physical humanoid platform developed for Japan's five-year Humanoid Robotics Project, which began in 1998. The platform was completed during the project's first two-year phase and used enhanced Honda P3 hardware. AIST's contemporary comparison lists a height of 160 cm and a weight of 120 kg, with no waist joint and a backpack-mounted electronics system.
A developer-authored review gives 30 degrees of freedom: 2 in the head, 7 in each arm, 1 in each hand and 6 in each leg. This differs from the 130 kg and 28-DoF figures of the original Honda P3 that were previously attributed to HRP-1.
AIST later paired the hardware with its own controller as HRP-1S, enabling simultaneous arm-and-leg control for applications including teleoperation of industrial vehicles. The lighter HRP-2 replaced it as the project's final research platform.
